GATE 2027 Defect Rectification: Window Extended to 31 October, Free Fix Steps on GOAPS

GATE 2027 defect rectification window is open from 14 to 31 October 2026 with no extra fee. Official defect types, step-by-step fix on GOAPS, DigiLocker photo ID defects, zonal contacts and what happens if you miss the deadline.

18 October 2026

If you got an email from your GATE zone saying your application has a defect, don't panic. A defect is not a rejection. IIT Madras has opened the GATE 2027 defect rectification window, officially called "Application rectification (Scrutiny Defects)", from 14 October 2026 to 31 October 2026. The GATE 2027 official website confirms that candidates "must rectify the defects during the rectification window without paying any additional fee."

The closing date was first set as 21 October 2026. It has since been moved to 31 October 2026 on the official important dates page and in the GATE 2027 Information Brochure (revised 17 October 2026). This guide explains what defect rectification is, which defects the official FAQ lists, how to fix them on GOAPS, and what happens if you miss the deadline. Every rule here comes from IIT Madras's official pages. Where IIT Madras has not announced something yet, we say so.

Key Takeaways

  • The GATE 2027 defect rectification window runs from 14 October 2026 to 31 October 2026. The earlier closing date of 21 October 2026 has been replaced.
  • Fixing scrutiny defects is free. No additional fee is charged during this window.
  • Defects are flagged by your Zonal Institute and sent by email. The brochure also mentions SMS/WhatsApp, and the FAQ mentions phone calls from your zone.
  • This is not the same as the Data Correction Window (paid changes to paper, city or category). Dates for that window are still TBA.
  • Defects left unfixed after the deadline mean your application "will either be considered as PROVISIONAL or REJECTED", according to the official FAQ.

What Is GATE 2027 Defect Rectification?

Every paid GATE 2027 application goes through scrutiny. Section 6.9 of the Information Brochure, "Application Scrutiny and Rectification", explains that applications are checked for "accuracy of the data, which include verification against the uploaded supporting documents, clarity of the photograph and signature." If everything is fine, the application is accepted. If not, "the defects will be marked and intimated to the candidate by email or SMS/WhatsApp for rectification within a stipulated time frame."

Defect rectification means fixing what scrutiny flagged, using your own GOAPS login, within the official window. According to the GATE 2027 homepage, scrutiny is "currently in progress at the Zonal Institutes". So the defect you see was raised by the zonal GATE office handling your application, not by a central automated check.

The brochure gives a clear instruction: "Candidates must promptly rectify the defects in their application within the stipulated time. Candidates are advised to login to the application portal and check the status of the defects regularly."

Source: GATE 2027 Important Dates, IIT Madras. IIT Madras notes that "all dates are liable to change." Check the official page before acting.

Here's what I tell every student: don't treat 31 October as your target date. The FAQ says that after you fix a defect, your application "will again go for 'Scrutiny'". If the second review finds a problem, you need time left in the window to fix it again. Fix it in the first two or three days after you get the email.

For the full GATE 2027 calendar, see our GATE 2027 important dates guide.

Defect Rectification vs Data Correction Window: Don't Confuse Them

This is the mistake I see most often. GATE 2027 has two separate post-submission windows, and they do different jobs:

Defect Rectification (Scrutiny Defects) Data Correction Window (Candidate Request)
Who starts it Your Zonal Institute, after scrutiny finds a defect You, if you want to change something
What it covers Only the defects flagged in your email or on GOAPS Changes such as test paper, exam city or category, as described in the official FAQ
Fee No additional fee Additional payment per the official FAQ (amounts to be announced)
Dates 14 to 31 October 2026 TBA

The official FAQ says changes to your test paper, exam city or category will be accepted "ONLY after the last date for application submission... against additional payment. Dates for the same will be announced later." So if you want to switch from GATE CS to GATE DA, or add a second paper, the free rectification window is not the place to do it. Wait for the Data Correction Window. Our GATE 2027 application form correction guide covers that window in more detail.

How to Know If You Need Defect Rectification

The GATE 2027 homepage says you may see one of three statuses when you log into GOAPS:

  1. Application Under Scrutiny: "your application is under scrutiny by the respective zones. Please regularly check emails and goaps portal." Unverified DigiLocker users also need to give consent to the DigiLocker drive and upload their photo ID proof as instructed.
  2. Application is Defective: "please correct the defect as suggested in the email and modify in the goaps portal." This is the status that needs rectification.
  3. Application in Order and Accepted: "Your application has been cleared, and all is well."

The official FAQ also lists "Under Scrutiny: Defect Rectification Done". This means you have fixed the defects and your application is being reviewed again. For a full breakdown of every status, read our GATE 2027 application status guide.

Check three places regularly: your GOAPS dashboard, the inbox (and spam folder) of the email linked to your DigiLocker account, and SMS/WhatsApp on your registered mobile. The FAQ says defect alerts can come "by email, SMS, or phone call from your respective Zone."

Official GATE 2027 Defects and How to Rectify Each One

The GATE 2027 FAQ lists specific defect scenarios and the official fix for each. These are the ones you can rely on. For a broader look at why applications get flagged, see our GATE 2027 defective application guide.

Defect Official fix
Photograph not as per specifications Upload a new photograph
Signature not as per specifications Upload a new signature image
Photograph and photo ID uploaded in each other's place Upload the correct images
ID number does not match the uploaded ID (for example, Aadhaar uploaded but PAN number entered) Upload the correct photo ID image, or correct the ID number field
Spelling mistake in name, marked defective Correct it "at later stage by furnishing supporting documents"
New name after marriage, but photo ID shows old name Upload the photo ID with old name along with an affidavit, and carry the affidavit to the exam hall

For each of the first four cases, the FAQ gives the same warning: "You will be given chances for rectification up to a deadline, beyond which your application will either be considered as PROVISIONAL or REJECTED."

Photograph Defects: The Official Specification

Take photo defects seriously. The brochure warns that "photographs not adhering to the specified criteria could lead to rejection of GATE application, and the application fee will not be refunded." Before you upload a replacement, check it against Section 6.7 of the brochure:

  • Colour, passport-size photo, JPEG/JPG format, maximum 600 kB
  • Aspect ratio between 0.66 and 0.89. After cropping, the face must cover 60–70% of the image
  • Resolution between 200 × 260 pixels (minimum) and 530 × 690 pixels (maximum)
  • Plain white background with no other objects or people
  • Frontal view showing forehead, eyes, nose and chin. No caps, hats, sunglasses, coloured glasses or masks
  • Normal spectacles are allowed, but not with glare. If you can't avoid the glare, remove the spectacles
  • No shadow on the face. The brochure also asks for a recent photo, "not older than 3 months"

One thing to remember: the brochure says your Admit Card and Score Card "will contain the same photograph that has been submitted at the time of application." Your replacement photo will appear on your scorecard, so take a proper one.

Signature Defects: The Official Specification

  • JPEG/JPG, maximum 300 kB, resolution between 250 × 80 and 580 × 180 pixels
  • Height-to-width ratio of 1:R, where R is between 2.75 and 3.75. The signature must cover 70–80% of the image after cropping
  • Black or dark blue ink only, signed by you
  • Not allowed (as shown in the brochure's samples): digital signatures, all-capital signatures, initials only, dark backgrounds, signatures that are too small or unclear, and signatures outside the box or not signed horizontally

Our GATE 2027 photo and signature size guide walks through resizing and cropping, so your replacement passes on the first try.

Photo ID Defects (Including Unverified DigiLocker Accounts)

The brochure says the photo ID "must clearly show the name, photo, ID number, and date of birth." According to the FAQ, if those details are on two sides of the card, you must upload both sides in a single PDF. Accepted IDs are Aadhaar-UID (preferred), Aadhaar Virtual ID, government-issued ID, Passport, PAN card, Voter ID and Driving Licence.

If you registered with an unverified DigiLocker account, scrutiny for you includes a document step. The official notification says these applications "will be scrutinized after the registration deadline for necessary documents" and that "original documents will be verified at the examination halls." The homepage tells unverified users to give consent to the DigiLocker drive and upload their photo ID proof as instructed. IIT Madras has also published an official video, PHOTOID Defect: Unverified Digilocker user, which is worth watching before you start.

For DigiLocker-specific problems, see our GATE 2027 DigiLocker registration guide.

Category and PwD Certificate Defects

  • SC/ST: A valid certificate from an authorised official is needed to claim the fee concession. Upload it to a DigiLocker folder named GATE2027 (no space) as CATEGORY.pdf.
  • PwD: Upload the PwD certificate as PWD_CERT.pdf and the UDID card as UDID_CERT.pdf in the same folder. If Appendix-B1 or B2 applies, combine it with the PwD certificate into one PDF named PWD_CERT.pdf.
  • File size: A 17 September 2026 notification says each DigiLocker Drive file must be between 10 KB and 600 KB.
  • OBC-NCL and EWS: No category certificate is required during the application, according to both the brochure and the FAQ.

The official required documents page warns that "uploading unreadable documents may lead to delays in processing the application and may lead to rejection of candidature." Scan clearly. Our GATE 2027 documents required checklist lists every file in one place.

How to Rectify Defects in GATE 2027: Step by Step

  1. Read the defect email carefully. It says which item was flagged. Fix only that item, exactly as the email asks. The homepage instruction is to "correct the defect as suggested in the email."
  2. Watch the official login video first. IIT Madras has published a Login instruction: Defect Rectification video. It takes a few minutes and can save you from making a mistake.
  3. Prepare the corrected file before you log in. Check it against the specifications above: file type, size, resolution, background, file name and DigiLocker folder name.
  4. Log into GOAPS with the same DigiLocker account you applied with. Use goaps.iitm.ac.in/login. Our GOAPS 2027 login guide helps if you have trouble signing in.
  5. Make the correction on the portal. Upload the new image, fix the ID number, or complete the DigiLocker document step, whichever your defect needs.
  6. Check that your status has changed to "Under Scrutiny: Defect Rectification Done." This confirms your fix was submitted and the application has gone back for review.
  7. Keep checking until you see "Application in Order and Accepted." If a new defect email comes, repeat the process while the window is still open.

You don't need to pay anything at any step. If a page asks for payment during scrutiny defect rectification, stop and check with your zone. The homepage clearly states rectification happens "without paying any additional fee."

Mistakes That Make Defect Rectification Fail

From years of guiding GATE aspirants through this stage, these are the mistakes that turn a simple fix into a problem:

  • Creating a new application. The FAQ is clear: "One email address can be used to submit only ONE application form." Fix the defect in your existing application.
  • Deleting or switching your DigiLocker account. IIT Madras has asked candidates not to delete their DigiLocker accounts after applying, because "future communications from GATE 2027 will ONLY be made with respect to the DigiLocker account using which the candidate has submitted the application."
  • Uploading a quick phone selfie as the new photo. It has to meet every Section 6.7 rule. A second defect uses up time you may not have.
  • Wrong folder or file name in DigiLocker. "GATE 2027" with a space, or "category.pdf" instead of CATEGORY.pdf, does not match the official instruction.
  • Trying to change paper, city or category in this window. Those changes belong to the paid Data Correction Window, which has not been announced yet.
  • Waiting until 31 October. You lose the chance to fix a second defect if the re-check finds one.

Who to Contact If You're Stuck

When you write in, include your Enrolment ID, the exact defect wording from the email, and a screenshot of your GOAPS status. This gives the zonal office everything it needs to identify your case.

What Happens If You Miss the GATE 2027 Rectification Deadline?

The official FAQ uses the same wording for every listed defect: after the rectification deadline, your application "will either be considered as PROVISIONAL or REJECTED." The FAQ also says fees are not refunded if you withdraw, and the brochure says rejection over photo defects comes with no refund. IIT Madras has not announced a second free rectification window after 31 October 2026. Do not plan around one.

The good news is that the official fix for each defect listed above is simple: upload a new image, correct a field, or provide a supporting document. If you act as soon as the email arrives, missing the deadline is avoidable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the last date for GATE 2027 defect rectification?

The official closing date is 31 October 2026. The window opened on 14 October 2026. It was first scheduled to close on 21 October 2026, but IIT Madras moved it to 31 October 2026 on the important dates page and in the Information Brochure revised on 17 October 2026.

Is there a fee for GATE 2027 defect rectification?

No. The GATE 2027 homepage says candidates who receive a defect notification must rectify the defects "without paying any additional fee." Paid changes, such as switching paper, exam city or category, belong to the separate Data Correction Window, whose dates are still TBA.

How will I know my GATE 2027 application is defective?

Your Zonal Institute will email you. The brochure also mentions SMS/WhatsApp, and the FAQ mentions phone calls from your zone. Your GOAPS status will show "Application is Defective". Check GOAPS and the email linked to your DigiLocker account regularly, including the spam folder.

Can I change my GATE paper or exam city during defect rectification?

The defect rectification window is for fixing defects flagged by scrutiny. The official FAQ says paper, exam city and category changes will be accepted after the application deadline "against additional payment", with dates "announced later". On the official important dates page, this appears as the Data Correction Window, which is currently marked TBA.

What does "Under Scrutiny: Defect Rectification Done" mean?

According to the official FAQ, it means your application had defects, you have fixed them, and the application "will again go for 'Scrutiny'". Keep checking GOAPS until it shows that your application is accepted.

What if I don't rectify the defect before 31 October 2026?

The official FAQ says that after the rectification deadline, a defective application "will either be considered as PROVISIONAL or REJECTED." IIT Madras has not announced any later free rectification window.

I registered with an unverified DigiLocker account. What do I need to do?

According to the GATE 2027 homepage, unverified account holders need to give consent to the DigiLocker drive and upload their photo ID proof as instructed. IIT Madras has published an official video on this ("PHOTOID Defect: Unverified Digilocker user"). Your original documents will also be checked at the exam hall, so carry the same original photo ID on exam day.

My name has a spelling mistake and my application is marked defective. Can it be fixed?

Yes. The official FAQ says you can make corrections in name spelling "in a given time duration at later stage by furnishing supporting documents." Follow the instructions in your defect email and contact your Zonal Institute if the email is not clear.

Who should I contact about a GATE 2027 defect?

Contact the Zonal Institute that sent the defect notification. All eight zonal emails and phone numbers are on the official GATE 2027 contact page. You can reach the organising institute at helpdesk@gate.iitm.ac.in or 044-22578200. Application queries are taken Monday to Friday, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Conclusion

GATE 2027 defect rectification is a free fix, open from 14 to 31 October 2026. Read your defect email, prepare a replacement that meets the official specifications, log into GOAPS with the same DigiLocker account, make the correction, and confirm your status changes to "Defect Rectification Done". Don't create a new application, don't delete your DigiLocker account, and don't wait for the last day. Once your application shows "Accepted", put that energy back into preparation, because February 2027 is closer than it looks.
