Paying the fee is not the last step of GATE 2027 registration. Every application goes through a scrutiny process at IIT Madras and the coordinating GATE offices, and the result of that review appears as your GATE 2027 application status on the GOAPS portal. That one line on your dashboard tells you whether you need to do nothing, wait, or fix a defect before a hard deadline. Read it wrong and you can miss the rectification window, which for GATE 2027 closes on 21 October 2026.
This guide explains how to check your status, what each of the six official statuses means (in the exact wording used on the official GATE 2027 FAQ page), what to do for each one, and how payment and change requests affect it. Every date and rule here is taken from the GATE 2027 official website and the GATE 2027 Information Brochure (revised version dated 27 September 2026).
Key Takeaways
- Check your GATE 2027 application status by logging into GOAPS at goaps.iitm.ac.in/login. Indian nationals sign in with the DigiLocker account they applied with.
- GOAPS shows one of six official statuses. Only one of them, "Your application is incomplete or defective", needs immediate action from you.
- "Under Scrutiny" is a normal review stage, not a rejection.
- The application rectification window runs from 14 to 21 October 2026. This is also the last date to change category, paper or exam cities, add a paper, or change personal details. Fees may apply per change.
- Defects are communicated by email or SMS/WhatsApp. Check your GOAPS dashboard yourself as well; do not rely only on messages.

IIT Madras has said that no further extension will be given after the special registration window. If you have not yet registered, that window is your last chance. If you have already paid, the date that matters is 21 October 2026, when rectification closes.
How to Check GATE 2027 Application Status on GOAPS
The Information Brochure says your application status "can be checked anytime by logging into the GATE 2027 application portal." Logging into GOAPS is the official way to check it. Here is the process:
- Open the official portal. Go to gate2027.iitm.ac.in and click Apply Now, or go directly to the GOAPS login page at goaps.iitm.ac.in/login.
- Choose your login tab. The login page has two tabs: Indian Citizens and Foreign Nationals. Indian citizens click Continue with DigiLocker.
- Sign in with the same DigiLocker account you used to apply. IIT Madras has said that future GATE 2027 communication will be linked only to the DigiLocker account used to submit the application. A different DigiLocker account will not show your application.
- Read the status on your dashboard. The status line shows one of the six official statuses explained below. If it shows a defect, the defect message will be there too.
- Save a record. Take a dated screenshot of your status and keep your downloaded application PDF and payment confirmation together. You will want these if you ever need to contact the helpdesk.
For a full walkthrough of signing in, including fixes for DigiLocker consent and "maximum attempts" errors, see our GOAPS 2027 login guide.
All 6 GATE 2027 Application Statuses Explained
The GATE 2027 FAQ page lists six statuses. The first two columns below use the official wording. The third column is what we recommend you do.
| Status on GOAPS | Official meaning | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Application submitted | You have not made the payment yet. | Your application is not complete. IIT Madras has said unpaid accounts will be deleted after the registration portal closes. If the special window (until 16 October 2026, 10:29 AM) is still open, pay now. |
| Your application is submitted and payment received successfully | You have submitted the application and made payment successfully. Next, it will go to "Scrutiny" process. | Nothing. Download your application PDF and keep checking GOAPS. |
| Under Scrutiny | Your application is under review and verification is in progress. | Wait. Watch your email, SMS/WhatsApp and GOAPS dashboard for any defect message. |
| Your application is incomplete or defective. Read the instructions below and take actions accordingly | Some defects are there in your application and you have not rectified the defects yet. | Act now. Read the defect message, fix it on GOAPS and resubmit before 21 October 2026. |
| Under Scrutiny: Defect Rectification Done | Some defects were there in your application and you have rectified the defects. It will again go for "Scrutiny". | Wait for the second review. Keep checking until the status changes again. |
| Application accepted | After scrutiny, your application has been accepted and no action is required from you. | Nothing on the application. Your next step is the exam city notification on 4 January 2027. |
The Information Brochure also lists "Rejected with valid reasons" among the statuses GOAPS can show. The official FAQ explains when this can happen: if a defect is not rectified before the deadline, the application "will either be considered as PROVISIONAL or REJECTED."

What Happens During Scrutiny
Section 6.9 of the Information Brochure describes the review. Applications are checked for:
- Accuracy of the data you entered
- Whether that data matches your uploaded supporting documents
- Clarity of your photograph and signature
If everything is in order, the application is accepted. If not, defects are marked and you are told by email or SMS/WhatsApp, with a stipulated time to fix them. The status is updated by the coordinating GATE office handling your application.
One group should watch more closely. IIT Madras allowed candidates to register with an unverified DigiLocker account by choosing a default ID proof. The official guideline page says these applications "will be scrutinized after the registration deadline for necessary documents," and original documents will also be checked at the exam hall. If you registered this way, expect a document request and keep your original photo ID ready.
Status Shows "Defective"? How to Fix It
The official FAQ gives examples of problems that get an application marked defective:
- A photograph or signature that does not meet the specifications
- Photograph and photo ID uploaded in each other's place
- An ID number that does not match the uploaded ID (for example, Aadhaar uploaded but PAN number entered)
- A name spelling mistake. The FAQ says this can be corrected later by furnishing supporting documents.
To fix a defect:
- Read the exact defect message on GOAPS and in the email or SMS/WhatsApp. Fix only what is flagged.
- Prepare the corrected file first. For photographs, the brochure requires JPEG/JPG, at most 600 KB, between 200 × 260 and 530 × 690 pixels, with the face covering 60–70% of the cropped image on a white background. For signatures it requires JPEG/JPG, at most 300 KB, between 250 × 80 and 580 × 180 pixels, in black or dark blue ink. Our GATE 2027 photo and signature size guide covers the details.
- Log into GOAPS before 21 October 2026 and upload the correction or edit the flagged field.
- Pay any applicable change fee (see the table below).
- Check that the status changes to "Under Scrutiny: Defect Rectification Done." If it still shows defective, your correction has not gone through.
For a full list of common defects and how to prevent each one, read our GATE 2027 defective application guide.
Changes You Can Still Make Until 21 October 2026
According to the Information Brochure, 21 October 2026 is the last date to change category, paper or exam city choices, add a new test paper, or change personal details. An additional fee may apply per change. The official application fees page lists these charges:
| Change requested | Fee (per paper) |
|---|---|
| Change of category to SC/ST | ₹500 |
| Change of category from SC/ST to any other | ₹500 (female or PwD candidates); ₹1,500 (all other candidates) |
| Change from Non-PwD to PwD | ₹500 |
| Change from PwD to Non-PwD | ₹500 (female or SC/ST candidates); ₹1,500 (all other candidates) |
| Any other change in category | ₹500 |
| Change in choice of examination cities | ₹500 |
| Change of existing paper | ₹500 |
Two rules cannot be fixed this way. The brochure says that "No change in email or mobile number will be entertained at a later stage." And one email address can be used for only one application, so do not create a second application to "fix" the first.
If you want to add a second paper, the FAQ confirms you can add one from the allowed combinations to the same enrolment ID after payment. You should not create a new enrolment ID. Check that your pair is allowed on the official two-paper combinations page or in our GATE 2027 two-paper combination guide. For more on what can be edited, see the GATE 2027 application form correction guide.
Payment Problems and Your Application Status
Many "my status is wrong" worries are really payment timing issues. The Information Brochure and FAQ cover the common cases:
- Money debited, but status still says "Application submitted": Log in again after some time and check the payment status. If GATE did not receive the payment, start a new one. The brochure says money debited without an acknowledgement is credited back to the same bank account within 15 working days. It also advises you to make a fresh payment without waiting for that refund so you do not miss the deadline.
- Charged twice for one application: Extra payments are returned automatically to the same bank account, within about 15 working days.
- Want to withdraw and get a refund: Not possible. The official FAQ says the fee is not refunded on withdrawal. Refunds are processed only for duplicate transactions, with valid proof.
For the full fee structure, see our GATE 2027 application fees guide.

After "Application Accepted": What Comes Next
An accepted application means you have nothing more to do on the form. You will still need GOAPS for the rest of the cycle:
- 4 January 2027: Exam city notification. The FAQ notes that candidates are most likely to get their first-choice city, but GATE can allot a city outside your choices because of operational constraints.
- Admit card: Download dates are yet to be announced. Admit cards are only available on GOAPS and are not sent by post or email. You need a printed copy (preferably in colour) on A4 paper and your original photo ID at the centre.
- February 2027: Exams run on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February, in a forenoon session (9:30 AM to 12:30 PM) and an afternoon session (2:30 PM to 5:30 PM).
- 19 March 2027: Results are announced on GOAPS.
From this point, your score depends on how you use the next few months, not on paperwork. GATE CS aspirants should plan by marks distribution. Our GATE CSE subject-wise weightage analysis shows where the marks have come from, and the 4-month GATE CSE 2027 plan turns that into a week-by-week schedule. GATE DA aspirants should start with the GATE DA 2027 syllabus guide, and everyone should know the GATE 2027 exam pattern.
Common Mistakes When Tracking GATE 2027 Application Status
- Treating "Under Scrutiny" as a problem. It is the normal review stage. Every paid application passes through it.
- Waiting for an email instead of logging in. The brochure tells candidates to log in and check for defects regularly. Messages can land in spam or be delayed.
- Signing in with a different DigiLocker account. Your application is linked to the DigiLocker account you used to submit it. Do not delete that account.
- Uploading a fix that creates a new defect. Check every replacement photo, signature or ID against the official specifications before uploading.
- Leaving rectification to 21 October. Portals slow down near deadlines. Fix defects the day you see them.
- Trusting unofficial "status check" links. Your status is only available on GOAPS. Do not enter DigiLocker credentials on any other site.
Application Sorted? Now Focus on Your Score
Once your status shows "Application accepted", every remaining hour should go into preparation. Start with real exam questions: the free Success Tracker PYQ library has solved GATE previous year questions organised by exam, year and topic. Success Tracker also gives topic-wise skill scores, so you can see where to spend your revision time. For a guided programme, The ML Hub's GATE DA course covers the official Data Science and AI syllabus with structured lessons and mock tests, and the GATE CS course is taught by Jay Bansal (AIR 2, GATE CS 2019) and Sriniwas Paliwal (AIR 90, GATE CS 2019), both IIT Bombay alumni.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check my GATE 2027 application status?
Log into GOAPS at goaps.iitm.ac.in/login, which you can also reach from gate2027.iitm.ac.in by clicking Apply Now. Indian nationals choose the Indian Citizens tab and sign in with the same DigiLocker account they used to apply. Your current status appears on the dashboard. According to the GATE 2027 Information Brochure, you can check it at any time.
What does "Under Scrutiny" mean in GATE 2027 application status?
According to the official GATE 2027 FAQ, "Under Scrutiny" means your application is under review and verification is in progress. It is a normal stage after payment and is not a rejection. You only need to act if the status changes to "incomplete or defective" or you get a defect message.
What is the last date to fix a defective GATE 2027 application?
The GATE 2027 application rectification window runs from 14 October 2026 to 21 October 2026, according to the official important dates page. The Information Brochure also lists 21 October 2026 as the last date to change category, paper or exam cities, add a paper, or change personal details.
My GATE 2027 status still shows "Application submitted". What does it mean?
According to the official FAQ, "Application submitted" means the fee payment has not been made. IIT Madras has said unpaid accounts will be deleted after the registration portal closes. If money was debited but GOAPS did not record it, the amount is credited back within 15 working days. The brochure advises making a fresh payment without waiting for that refund.
How will I know if my GATE 2027 application has a defect?
The Information Brochure says defects are communicated by email or SMS/WhatsApp, and the official FAQ also mentions phone calls from your zone. The defect also shows on your GOAPS dashboard as "Your application is incomplete or defective." Log in regularly rather than relying only on messages.
Can I change my exam city or paper after my GATE 2027 application is accepted?
Yes, until 21 October 2026, for a fee. The official application fees page lists ₹500 for a change in exam city choices and ₹500 for a change of existing paper. Category change fees range from ₹500 to ₹1,500 depending on the change and your category.
Can I change my email or mobile number in GATE 2027 application?
No. The GATE 2027 Information Brochure says no change in email or mobile number will be entertained at a later stage. All communication goes to the email and mobile number registered with your application.
Will my GATE 2027 application be rejected if I miss the rectification deadline?
It can be. The official FAQ says that if a defect is not fixed by the deadline, the application "will either be considered as PROVISIONAL or REJECTED." Fix any defect well before 21 October 2026.
Conclusion
Your GATE 2027 application status is the only official sign of where your form stands, and it is only available on GOAPS. "Submitted and payment received" and "Under Scrutiny" mean wait. "Defect Rectification Done" means wait for the second review. "Application accepted" means you are done with the form. Only "incomplete or defective" needs action, and that action has to be finished by 21 October 2026. Check your dashboard regularly, keep the DigiLocker account you applied with, and once your status says accepted, spend your time on preparation.
