What is GATE CS?
GATE CS stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering — Computer Science and Information Technology. Students often call it “GATE CSE”, but the official paper code is CS and it covers both computer science and information technology. GATE itself is administered jointly by IISc and the IITs, with one of them designated the Organizing Institute each year — GATE 2026 was organized by IIT Guwahati and GATE 2027 by IIT Madras.
The CS paper is one of GATE's oldest and by far its most contested: in GATE 2026, 2,59,922 candidates registered and 2,11,020 appeared. It tests the full depth of computer science — from discrete mathematics and digital logic to operating systems, compilers, databases and computer networks — and rewards both conceptual understanding and the ability to solve numerical problems under time pressure.
Who Should Appear?
- Students targeting M.Tech / MS / Ph.D. in Computer Science at IITs, IISc and other institutes.
- Candidates aiming for PSU technical recruitment through GATE.
- Pre-final and final-year CS, IT and ECE students planning a postgraduate path — and students of other branches with strong CS fundamentals.
- Working professionals who want to return to academics through an IIT M.Tech.
Eligibility note: you can appear if you are in the 3rd or higher year of an undergraduate degree (B.E./B.Tech of any branch, B.Sc., BCA and more) or have completed one; students in the 1st year or higher of an M.Sc./MCA (or who have completed it) are also eligible. There is no age limit and no limit on the number of attempts — though institutes and PSUs set their own admission and recruitment criteria. See our GATE eligibility guide and always confirm against the official notification for your year.
Exam Pattern & Marking Scheme
GATE CS is a 3-hour computer-based test of 65 questions for 100 marks, with three question types — MCQ, MSQ and NAT.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Marking Scheme |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 10 | 15 | 5 questions × 1 mark +1 correct−1/3 wrong (MCQ) 5 questions × 2 marks +2 correct−2/3 wrong (MCQ) |
| Engineering Mathematics + Core CS | 55 | 85 | 25 questions × 1 mark* +1 correct−1/3 wrong (MCQ) 30 questions × 2 marks* +2 correct−2/3 wrong (MCQ) |
| Total | 65 | 100 | 3-hour computer-based test (CBT) |
Note: Within the 85 technical marks, Engineering Mathematics is officially fixed at 13 marks and the remaining nine CS subjects share 72 marks; the split among those nine subjects is not fixed and varies each year. *The official pattern states only that the 55 subject questions carry 1 or 2 marks each and total 85 marks; the 25 one-mark / 30 two-mark split is The ML Hub's arithmetic from those two official figures (the only combination that satisfies both), not a separately published number. The 5 + 5 split for General Aptitude is stated in the Information Brochure. Negative marking applies to multiple-choice questions (MCQ) only — 1/3 mark deducted for a wrong 1-mark MCQ and 2/3 for a wrong 2-mark MCQ. There is no negative marking for Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) or Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions, and MSQs carry no partial credit.
MCQ
One correct answer out of four options. Negative marking applies, so avoid blind guesses when you cannot eliminate any option.
MSQ
One or more options can be correct; all correct options must be selected for full marks. No negative marking.
NAT
Calculate and type a numerical answer — no options. No negative marking, so attempt every one you can compute.
Syllabus Overview
GATE CS has 10 subject sections plus General Aptitude. General Aptitude (15 marks) and Engineering Mathematics (13 marks) are fixed; the other nine sections share the remaining 72 marks. The latest official syllabus is the GATE CS 2027 syllabus from IIT Madras, which revised three sections — Digital Logic, Computer Organisation & Architecture and Computer Networks (the last one considerably reduced). Engineering Mathematics, Programming & Data Structures, Algorithms, TOC, Compiler Design, OS and Databases are unchanged from 2026.
GATE CS 2028 aspirants should treat the 2027 syllabus as their checklist until the GATE 2028 organizing institute publishes its own. For the full topic list, the marks split, our subject weightage analysis and the recommended study order, see the dedicated syllabus page.
GATE CS vs GATE DA: What's the Difference?
GATE CS and GATE DA are separate papers with different syllabi and different question papers. GATE CS covers core computer-science systems and theory, while GATE DA (introduced in 2024) is built around statistics, machine learning and AI. Here's how they compare.
| Aspect | GATE CS | GATE DA |
|---|---|---|
| Full form | Computer Science & Information Technology | Data Science & Artificial Intelligence |
| Introduced | Established (running for decades) | 2024 (newer paper) |
| Core focus | Algorithms, OS, DBMS, computer networks, TOC, compilers, digital logic & COA | Probability & statistics, ML, AI, Python |
| Programming language | C | Python |
| Maths | Engineering Mathematics fixed at 13 marks — discrete maths, linear algebra, calculus, probability | Probability & statistics, linear algebra, calculus & optimization — no fixed maths marks |
| Unique subjects | Theory of Computation, Compiler Design, Operating Systems, Computer Networks, Digital Logic, COA | Machine Learning, AI, Data Warehousing |
| Registrations (2026) | 2,59,922 | 91,764 |
| Qualifying cutoff — General (2026) | 30 / 100 | 26.4 / 100 |
| Best suited for | Software engineering, systems & core CS roles | Data science, ML & AI roles |
Overlap: Data Structures & Algorithms, Databases, Linear Algebra, Probability and General Aptitude appear in both — but CS tests them at a computer-science theory level (and in C), while DA uses a data-science lens (and Python). CS + DA is an approved two-paper combination for GATE 2027, so strong candidates can attempt both. For a full comparison of syllabus, competition and careers, read GATE DA vs GATE CS: which should you choose?, or explore the GATE DA exam hub.
Preparation Roadmap
A prerequisite-driven sequence: each subject builds on the one before it.
Maths & Digital Logic first
Engineering Mathematics (a fixed 13 marks) builds the mathematical maturity Algorithms needs, and Digital Logic lays the foundation for COA and Compiler Design.
Data Structures & Algorithms
The core problem-solving engine of the paper. Practise C programming, recursion, trees, graphs, DP and complexity analysis — these feed OS, DBMS and Networks later.
TOC, Compilers, OS & DBMS
Study TOC and Compiler Design together (formal languages drive parsing), then OS and DBMS, which reuse your queue, heap and B-tree knowledge.
COA, Networks + mocks
Finish with COA and the reduced 2027 Computer Networks syllabus, and start timed subject tests and full-length mocks in parallel.
Two revision cycles
Revise every subject at least twice — once a few weeks after first study and again close to the exam — using previous year questions solved without notes.
Analyse & refine
Track weak areas through test analysis, practise General Aptitude every week, and spend the final weeks on full-length mocks under exam conditions.
Starting early for 2028 gives you a longer runway: more time for first-pass coverage of every subject, two full revision cycles and a long mock-test phase. For week-by-week targets, see our GATE CSE study plan and preparation strategy, or follow the structured GATE CS 2028 course.
